Safety Net Day at the NCGA

North Carolina Safety Net Providers

Making a Difference in Your Community

Community Health Centers are part of the Safety Net provider community which provides primary care to medically underserved people across North Carolina. Other Safety Net providers include:
- Local Health Departments
- Free and Charitable Care Clinics
- Rural Health Centers
- Community Health Centers (Federally Qualified Health Centers)

Safety Net providers are able to provide care to uninsured and underinsured North Carolinas due to support from a variety of sources. For Community Health Centers, those sources include federal funding, NC Community Health Grants (for those that qualify), private donations, local government support, and revenues from insured patients (Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance).

The Community Health Grants program dedicates $5.4 million in state funding for the following purposes:
- Increase access to preventive and primary care services for medically vulnerable patients.
- Establish primary care safety net services in counties where no such services exist,
- Create new services or augment existing primary care and preventive medical services,
- Increase capacity to serve patients with low incomes by enhancing or replacing facilities, equipment or technologies at safety net sites.

Safety Net Advocacy Day: February 21, 2017

On Tuesday, February 21st, Safety Net providers came together in Raleigh to meet with their elected officials to:
a) Tell them more about their primary care Safety Net services, and
b) Ask for $7.5 million in additional Community Health Grants funding.

Safety Net Day was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who attended, and thanks to members of the North Carolina General Assembly who recognized the value of safety net providers and double the Community Health Grant program!
